Four common asthma triggers to know about

Asthma triggers are basically anything that may cause an asthma flare-up or worsen the symptoms of asthma. These include various materials, conditions, or activities. It can be difficult and for some people even impossible to avoid all the potential triggers of asthma. However, some of the triggers can be prevented by simply learning how to prevent exposure to the same. Below are some of the common triggers of asthma and effective ways to avoid them-

  • Triggers that are present in the air
    Triggers that are present in the air that may lead to an asthma flare-up include exposure to air pollution, pollen, fumes from burning vegetation, and cigarette smoke. Even though weeds, grasses, and flowers bloom throughout the year, there is increased exposure to pollen grains, especially in the fall and spring season. In order to avoid this asthma trigger, try avoiding being outside during the time of the day when pollens are at its peak. Also, if you have the facility of air conditioning use it as it helps in reducing indoor air pollutants. It additionally helps in lowering the overall humidity of the house or room as well. This further reduces the risk of dust mites and hence, reduces the risk of an asthma flare-up. Some people may also be triggered due to exposure to cold weather.
  • Molds and mildew
    The biggest triggers of asthma are molds and mildew. Being aware of damp places in your house like kitchen, basement, bath, and even around your yard helps in to prevent these triggers and cause an asthma flare-up. This is because places of high humidity increase the risk of mildew and mold growth. If humidity is a concern for you, investing in a dehumidifier is an effective option. Also, ensure that you have thrown away rugs, leaves, firewood, or even curtains with mold and mildew.
  • Dust mites
    Dust mites hide in the most common rooms and places which we tend to visit a lot throughout the day like living rooms, offices, bedrooms, etc. It is essential to purchase covers for your mattress, sofa, and box spring that are dust-proof. Additionally, you can purchase products like dust-proof pillow wraps to keep between your pillow and pillowcase, to keep the dust away. Note that rugs and carpets are dust magnets as well. Hence, it is important to clean them thoroughly from time-to-time or replace carpet flooring with hardwood floor. While washing linens ensure you wash them in hot water.
  • Threats from crawling creatures
    Cockroaches not only seem scary to some people but are triggers for asthma too. The little bugs and their droppings can potentially trigger an asthma attack. It is important to take steps to solve the cockroach problems as soon as you see it. Store and cover up water and food containers well and remove the open ones. Sweep, vacuum, and mob areas where you see cockroaches. Also, in order to reduce the bugs in your home, use roach gels and even call an exterminator, if needed. Another thing to note is the surroundings where you live as chances are that bugs are aplenty outside your home as well.
