Knowing the common causes of gas

Digestion and absorption are the two main functions of the digestive system. It is a complex process that involves that breakdown of foods into smaller molecules making it easy for the body to absorb the essential nutrients and minerals that form part of one’s daily diet. The rest is waste processed out of the body through excreta.

Gas is a result of the good bacteria processing all foods and beverages thus releasing hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and methane. Collectively these gases exit the body in the form of a burp or in the form of a fart.

Gas is a natural reflex and can be caused due to any one of the following reasons.

  • High fiber intake
Doctors recommend a high fiber diet to help battle constipation. However, whole wheat, grains, fresh fruits, and cruciferous vegetables are some of the common causes of gas. These are high fiber foods and require the digestive system to work double time to process and breakdown for energy. Excess digestion results in more bacteria processing the food that leads to increased levels of gas.
  • Food allergies or sensitivity
It is not uncommon for people to suffer from mild to moderate food allergies that can also result in gas. Some people have difficulty in digesting milk and milk-based products, a condition commonly known as lactose intolerance. Even a small quantity of such foods can cause the digestive system to produce excessive gas leading to discomfort and pain in the abdomen. One must consult with a medical professional to determine if they are allergic to certain types of foods or beverages.
  • Aerophagia
Drinking carbonated beverages, drinking too fast, smoking or even talking while eating can cause one to swallow excessive amounts of air, a condition commonly referred to as aerophagia. An irregular breathing pattern or breathing heavily through the mouth can also lead to an excessive build-up of gas in the digestive system.
  • Relaxing after meals
It is not advisable to simply sit back and relax after having a delicious and filling meal. Doctors recommend taking a walk right after dinner or lunch to ensure the digestive system stays active. It remains unclear as to why increased levels of activity after a heavy meal help relieve gas. However, cultivating the habit of going for walk or doing some stretching exercises meant for digestion which help relieve the gassiness to a great extent.
  • Probiotics
Good bacteria in the digestive system help to break down food into energy. However, some people have to take probiotic supplements to boost the levels of good bacteria in the gut to help aid the digestion process. Gas can also be a direct symptom of probiotic supplements and their regular consumption to boost the digestive activity in one’s system.
  • Gastrointestinal disorders
Gas is a natural reflex of the digestive system. However, persistent discomforts due to excessive levels of gas should not be ignored and immediate medical attention is advisable. One must look out for symptoms like belly pain, heartburn, and unusual changes in one’s weight. Common conditions that can cause excessive gas include gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), intestinal blockages, and celiac disease among many others.
