Home remedies for managing cold and cough

Cold and cough are one of the most common viral infections that affect the nose and throat. A runny nose, sneezing, fatigue, and cough are the first signs of a developing cold and cough. There are close to 200 viruses that can cause a cold and cough infection, and a majority of these viruses have not been identified and cataloged yet.

However, the symptoms of a common cold are not so severe, and it is easy to manage the mild to moderate symptoms with home remedies. Medical attention is advisable for persistent symptoms as the condition can develop into a severe allergy or even the flu.

Some simple home remedies for cold and cough are:

Drink fluids
If one is suffering from the symptoms of a cold and cough, it is essential that they stay hydrated. Drinking liquids at room temperature will help provide relief from a runny nose and sneezing. One can also drink hot beverages like clear broths, herbal tea, decaffeinated black tea, warm water, and even warm fruit juices. Hot beverages can clear up a sore throat, provide relief from chills, and help overcome fatigue.

Steam
Taking steam from time to time will help get rid of the mucus and phlegm. One can also add essential oils and herbs to a steam bowl and breathe in the fumes to get relief from the symptoms. Eucalyptus and rosemary are the best options for a steam bowl as these natural herbs and oils will help relieve the decongestion caused due to persistent cold and cough. Taking a steaming hot bath will also help the body manage fatigue and tension.

Ginger
Ginger is a versatile ingredient that is useful in countering nausea and pain caused due to persistent cold and cough. Its anti-inflammatory compounds help relax the airways in the membranes of the lungs, thus easing one’s breathing. It also helps to control coughing. Note that ginger tea can sometimes cause stomach pain or result in heartburn due to its strong acidic nature. One can incorporate a little honey into ginger tea to improve its taste and cut back on the acidity.

Honey tea
Honey tea can help provide relief from the persistent symptoms of cold and cough. Honey lemon tea or regular honey tea is quite easy to make. One can drink this twice a day to soothe a sore throat. Another option is to incorporate a few teaspoons of honey with regular tea or herbal tea.

Bromelain
Bromelain is an enzyme extracted from the core of the pineapple. It is rich in anti-inflammatory properties and provides relief from mucus and congestion. Bromelain has mucolytic properties that break down the mucus and clears out nasal cavities. It also assists patients in breathing normally again. However, before using this, it is vital to check if one is allergic to bromelain as the herb can react with blood thinners or antibiotics taken to counter the symptoms of other medical conditions.

Probiotic drinks
Probiotics do not directly provide relief from cold and cough but are nevertheless essential for boosting one’s immunity. A strong immune system will help fight off infections and allergens that cause cold and cough, thus curbing the condition at its source.
