Snack Foods to Help Ease Eczema

Eczema is characterized as a type of inflammatory skin condition also called atopic dermatitis. Although the symptoms most likely present in infancy (under 2-years old) eczema can crop up in older childhood and adult years as well with skin redness, inflammation, itchy rash, leathery scales, and oozing blisters. While environmental factors can trigger eczema flare ups, diet also plays an impactful role, both negatively and positively. For instance, studies show that breastfeeding babies are less likely to develop eczema if expectant moms avoid cow’s milk throughout their pregnancy.

Food allergies are very common in eczema patients, which is why avoiding triggering foods is imperative to managing symptoms. Likewise, the following foods are well known eczema relievers:

1. Carob muffins
Those with milk allergies probably already cook and bake with carob, a caffeine free yet sweet cocoa-alternative. Carob makes a naturally sweet alternative to chocolate in baking, cooking, and snacking. Sprinkle it on oats, cookies, or muffins. Plus it’s been used for centuries as a natural digestive and skin reliever because it’s free of salicylates, a type of a type of phenolic and beta hydroxy acid in most chocolate that can trigger eczema.

2. Pear smoothies
Along with being jam packed with both insoluble and soluble fiber, the pear is a celebrated anti-inflammatory fruit. Just be sure to wash and then peel away the skin to get rid of any lingering chemical residues and enjoy the alkalizing benefits. Pears make a great addition to fresh juices and smoothies because they puree smoothly and take on other spices and fruit flavors easily. Try mixing sliced pears with bananas, apples, almond milk, and cinnamon.

3. Oatmeal
Oats are a satisfying and versatile whole grain. They can be served for an early morning, mid morning, or late afternoon, even a late night snack as they make excellent cereal, cereal bars, yogurt topping, and provide a nutritious alternative to white, refined flours. Plus oats deliver a potent mix of vitamin E, fiber, silica, and zinc to build fresh, strong, healthy skin.

4. Beet chips
Beets have long been used in skin care products due to their ability to make skin glow, literally from the inside, out! Not only do beets naturally aid the process of chemical and toxin elimination via the liver; they also support collagen production for rejuvenating skin. Plus, they offer a great alternative to trans fatty potato chips. Make your own beet chips at home by lining a baking sheet with thin sliced beets on parchment paper. Drizzle with oil, salt, and a dash of balsamic vinegar and bake until crisp. Voila, healthier salt and vinegar beet chips for snacking.
